bridging LGBTQ+ research to community impact.

The Queer Development Lab square logo. Five horizontally overlapping squares with black and pink coloring, and black drawings of hands in between each square.
The Queer Development Lab aims to support LGBTQ+ people by leading research that centers diverse LGBTQ+ lived experiences, uncovers drivers of health disparities, and highlights strengths of LGBTQ+ people and their families. Learn more about recent and on-going research.

Led by Dr. Eric Layland, the Queer Development Lab is a research group at the University of Delaware made up of faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students. Reflected by the pink triangles in our logo, the more we connect and work together, the more we reveal the collective power and action of queer people. Learn more about our team and how to join.
Two individuals posed side by side, each smiling. The person to the left has tan skin and a black mullet with blunt bangs and a septum piercing. They are facing the person to the right, who is leaning over their shoulder– they have dark skin and curly brown hair pulled into an updo.

Empowering Queer Thriving

The Queer Joy Project highlights diverse experiences of LGBTQIA+ happiness, resistance, and community strength. In collaboration with Massey University in New Zealand, we are examining the flourishing of LGBTQIA+ folks across multiple cultures.
Two individuals posed next to each other, smiling. The person on the left has dark skin and a black beard, with their arm around the person to the right of them. The person to the right has dark skin and a gray beanie on, and is looking at the person to the left of them.

LGBTQ+ Adolescents & their Parents

The LGBTQ+ Socialization Project aims to understand how LGBTQ+ youth grow to understand their sexual orientation or gender identity and what parents need to cultivate this developmental process. Find out if you're eligible for the study.

Policy & Intervention

By researching policy and interventions, we can better understand effective tools for improving and protecting the lives of LGBTQIA+. Research can develop and test intervention tools and can provide evidence of policy impact on individuals.
Two individuals hugging each other and smiling. The person further behind the other has glasses, combed over brunette hair, and has their arms around the person in front of them. The person in front of them has brown combed over hair, a beige hat, a beard, and glasses.

Intersectional Health Research

For LGBTQ+ people of color, intersecting experiences of racism and heterosexism uniquely impact health.  Learn more about on-going research in our lab on intersectional approaches to LGBTQ+ health.
